Finally, a safe weed killer for organic weed control!
With environmental consciousness on the rise, many of us are looking for a safe weed killer to apply to our lawn. Every spring and summer, we find ourselves staring in envy at a particular neighbor's perfect, lush, green grass. Nevertheless, we're still unwilling to hire a lawn care service or research and apply pesticides by ourselves.
More importantly, we now know these chemicals pollute our streams, wells and water systems. They simply don't belong on our lawn.
Many of the chemicals are toxic, while some are suspected carcinogens. Every time it rains, the contaminated runoff travels through different ecosystems affecting aquatic life, plant life and biodiversity. We’re left with important questions about the safety of weed killing products.
What can we do to improve our yards without harming our environment?

Is there such a thing as a safe weed killer?

Is existing, organic weed control even effective?
First, there are safe, household food items that can be used to directly treat problematic weeds. Try making a mixture of lemon juice and household vinegar. This mixture will work on many types of weeds. Just spray, and let the weeds shrivel and die over a few days. For more difficult weeds, you may need a stronger vinegar concentration. You can purchase a 20% acetic acid solution that uses Yucca extract as a sticking agent. The solution will kill unwanted grass, weeds or plant material by dehydrating the plant. Be careful, even though this is considered an environmentally safe weed killer, it will kill any vegetation that comes in contact.

Whole property, organic weed control does exist. My local lawn service company has been using their organic weed control system on my lawn for about two years. My yard is now free of weeds and looks as good as any chemically treated lawn, maybe better.

The weed killing agent is actually corn gluten meal. In reality, this natural, organic weed control product doesn’t really kill anything, but acts as a pre-emergent herbicide that safely disrupts the normal germination process of certain weeds. In addition, there’s another benefit, the corn gluten safely and naturally fertilizes my other plants.
Safe weed killers do exist. With environmentally conscious research expanding every day, I’m sure we’ll discover many new and exciting products to help us live healthier, happier lives. Lives that work in harmony with our planet.
