Two years ago, this area was a grassy spot filled with picnic tables and lawn chairs. It was the shaded gathering place for outdoor meals and entertaining. As the maple tree matured, the grass receded and mud emerged. The tree roots were large and obtrusive, prohibiting the use of concrete, bricks or stone for a patio. The tree was spectacular. You could sit beneath it in a gentle rain without getting wet. The homeowner's attempts to start new grass had failed.
The space between the maple tree and the driveway allowed us just enough room for a 12' x 12' deck. I transplanted ferns and other shade plants that were already on the property into raised beds around the deck and perimeter. I edged the beds with belgian blocks to keep the areas separated.

The homeowners would need a mud free path to enter and exit the house, a patio area for dining and some new beds to frame the area.
