Landscape and Garden Design Tip #8 Tailor the Garden to Fit Your Personality
How much time do you want to spend in the garden. Be honest. Are you someone who dreads cutting grass? You might consider removing a good portion of it. You could opt for raised beds with ornamental grasses. They’ll even bloom for you. Do you hate pruning and other maintenance chores? Ask your local nursery employees for practical low maintenance suggestions.
You may prefer trees and plants with slow growth habits and minimal shedding. If you love to have your hands in the soil as much as possible, you can afford to be more adventurous. In my yard is a giant old Sycamore tree. It self-prunes constantly, dropping branches and twigs throughout the yard. Fortunately, I love to use my outdoor firepit. There’s nothing like an outdoor campfire on a cool evening.
This magnificent, messy Sycamore provides me with summer shade and an endless supply of free kindling and firewood. A wonderful specimen in my yard. Think about your weekends and free time. Would you rather be golfing, napping or caring for your garden? Be realistic about your preferences and plan accordingly.
