Emerald Green Arborvitae
Emerald Green Arborvitae is a member of the Cypress family. It offers year round color and privacy. It’s an easy to grow and low maintenance species. Some have published a growth rate of up to 4 feet a year. Mine averages about 6 to 8 inches per year.
Purple Leaf Sandcherry
This species is said to be a fast growing hedge. In my experience it may take a while to provide good coverage. In the beginning the appearance is more wispy than dense. The upside is the incredibly beautiful purple foliage and the whitish spring flowers. This bush is truly remarkable and well worth the space in your garden plan. The mature size ranges from 6 to 8 feet high by 7 to 8 feet wide.
Man-Made Walls
The advantages of man made walls are instant gratification, year round privacy and permanence.
Considering the permanence, remember you’ll be committing to a certain look and any maintenance issues for years to come.
If budget allows and total privacy is your priority, you may want to investigate brick, stone or stucco. If you’d like a low cost alternative that you can install yourself, a wood product may be the best choice. You can buy pre-assembled panels at your home store. If you like the look of wood or metal without the associated maintenance, there are many new vinyl and composite options available from which to choose. Fences have evolved so much that there is something for any taste. Remember to consult a professional contractor if you are uncertain of your skills.
Finishing Touches
After the walls are in place, don’t forget to embellish them. There’s no reason to settle for bare wooden slats or wide vacant spaces. You wouldn’t leave the walls in your home empty. Investigate climbing plants and vines, making sure to choose appropriately. For example, some species of ivy can destroy mortar in a brick structure but might be perfect on a wooden version. Some climbers may also be invasive in your region. Ask your garden center employee for advice.
Some of my favorites are Wisteria, Climbing Roses ,Climbing Hydrangea, Akebia, Virginia Creeper, Trumpet Creeper, Boston Ivy and Clematis.
