The Garden Ceiling
John Conti
Trees

Trees provide a lot more than shade, shelter and beauty. They often dictate the function of the areas below. They can empower or inhibit the garden. When planning for trees, consider their growth habits and maintenance issues. Whether positive or negative, a 60 foot tall structure will have a huge effect on the surfaces beneath. Make sure you can really commit, or stick to smaller ornamental species.

Canopies

Today, there are scores of wonderful canopies available-from portable to permanent. Colorful fabrics and decorative support structures make it easy to add function and style to your yard. If the area is too small for a canopy, umbrellas can be used in the same way.

Arbors and Pergolas

Arbors and pergolas will add dimension and ambience to the garden. They are one of my favorite tools. Bare or covered in foliage-they create inviting entrances, hallways and corridors. They are effective in creating cozy intimate areas. They remind us to slow down and savor each turn and aspect of the garden.

Screened-in porches and gazebos can be wonderful choices. They provide excellent shelter and extend your outdoor enjoyment during unfavorable weather conditions.
The garden ceiling is often overlooked. The areas above the garden will dramatically impact the amount of light, shade and shelter available. They also influence the temperature and mood of the environment.
